A dental bridge is a popular, affordable, and low-risk prosthetic procedure for your missing teeth. The procedure involves bridging the gap created when teeth are lost. The typical bridge comprises one or more artificial teeth, known as pontics, which are held in place by two dental crowns. Almost anyone who is missing one to three consecutive teeth is a candidate for a dental bridge.
At Pete Richards, DDS, Dr. Pete Richards has years of experience in installing dental bridges. During your first visit, we will prepare your teeth for the crown. Preparation involves removing a portion of enamel to allow room for a crown to be placed over them. Next, impressions of your teeth are made, which serve as a model from which the bridge will be made by a dental laboratory. Your dentist will make a temporary bridge for you to wear to protect the exposed teeth and gums while your bridge is being made.
During your second visit, your temporary bridge will be removed and the new permanent bridge will be checked and adjusted, as necessary, to achieve a proper fit. Multiple visits may be required to check the fit of the metal framework and bite but after a couple weeks, the bridge is permanently cemented into place.
